Springerville has a
variety of activities which shape its local economy. These include
tourism, agriculture, construction, forest service, hunting, fishing,
lumbering, and retail sales. Cattle and sheep ranching were early economic
activities and, while still important, have gradually been replaced as
prime contributors to economic stability.
Service to the
tourist trade and local community is the major contributor to the
employment structure, followed by retail trade. Springerville provides a
large majority of the retail service in a 25-mile trade area, which
includes the western edge of New Mexico.
Nationally
recognized archaeological ruins, Casa Malpais, are located within the town limits. Tour information and
additional archaeological information is available from the Chamber of
Commerce.
Springerville
Generating Station, operated by Tucson Electric Power, employs 200 people.
The Coronado Generating Station near St. Johns (29 miles north) also has a
positive effect on the Springerville economy by the increased demand for
housing, medical services and retail trade from its 205 employees.
Springerville's
location on U.S. 60 and state Highways 180-191, with nearby airport
facilities, puts it within easy reach of the White Mountain recreation
area. This profile was prepared by the Arizona Department of Commerce
Communications and Research Division in cooperation with the Town of
Springerville.
