Snowflake

In the summer of 1878, a group of Mormon pioneers, including Erastus Snow and William J. Flake, were sent on colonization missions by Brigham Young. They settled on Stinson Ranch and named the town site Snowflake. That same year, settlers also founded Taylor, named in honor of John Taylor, a president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Many descendants of these pioneers are still in the area.

The semi-arid climate is pleasant, with an average temperature of 50 degrees in the winter and 80 to 95 degrees in the summer. Taylor and Snowflake celebrate patriotism and the heritage of freedom-loving people in a big way during the July 24 Pioneer Days celebration and the Labor Day Sweet Corn Festival. They even honor those who built the communities where a cooperative and caring attitude for family and neighbors is the rule.

The beauty of these cemeteries and the peace one feels at those places make them worth a visit.

church.gif (17985 bytes)The atmosphere of the "Old Southwest" lives on in the Snowflake/Taylor area. Many of the homes of the first generation of settlers still remain and some are on the Historical Register. The Pioneer Days Festival in late July, is enjoyed by thousands of visitors and fun can be had by all. Join in the celebrations with parades, delicious barbecues, rodeos, dances, fireworks and arts and crafts. The Sweet Corn Festival on Labor Day weekend is the time to enjoy all of the sweet corn you can eat and experience the parade, rodeo, fireworks and a potpourri of arts and crafts.

The Snowflake/Taylor visitor and resident enjoys drier winters and warmer summers. The more moderate climate allows for year around golfing, fishing, hunting, camping and hiking. A special outing is to travel back in time and visit Silver Creek Canyon where the walls are dotted with petroglyphs which are ancient stories recorded by the American Indians. Other attractions are The Stinson Museum, the Smith Home, the Flake Home and the Taylor Museum. Contact the Chamber of Commerce at (520) 536-4331 for visiting hours.
